Domino’s had already scripted the worst case scenario before the tournament even kicked off. On May 18, 2026, the chain announced its “Emergency Pizzas for Red Cards” campaign: if a Team USA player got ejected during the World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Domino’s would give away a million dollars worth of pizza. A marketing bet on a game incident that, statistically, was bound to happen sooner or later.
It happened in a knockout match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Minute 64, forward Folarin Balogun sees red. Straight card, early exit, and the promotional machine kicks in right on schedule.
The rules were simple enough: sign up for Domino’s Rewards before June 10, 2026, and you were eligible. Up to 63,371 randomly selected winners get a free medium two-topping pizza, redeemable through August 2, 2026. Everyone else walks away with a 20% off coupon, a smaller consolation prize, but a consolation prize nonetheless. Domino’s hasn’t released any numbers yet on how many pizzas have actually been claimed.
The promotion didn’t stop at pizza. Domino’s teamed up with Saturdays Football on a limited run of jerseys, caps, and slides sold alongside the campaign, turning one moment on the field into actual merchandise.
Team USA didn’t make it past that round. The quarterfinals were played July 9 through 11 without them. Balogun won’t get the chance to relive his red card for much longer than he has to. What’s left is this: out of 48 teams competing in this expanded World Cup, it took exactly one ejection to get a pizza chain talked about for an entire summer.
