International Chefs Day 2026: Meet the “Food Explorers”

October 20 marks International Chefs Day, launched in 2004 by the late chef Bill Gallagher and celebrated every year since by Worldchefs, the global federation of chefs’ associations. In kitchens, schools and vegetable gardens around the world, chefs spend the day (and often the whole month of October) passing their craft on to the next generation.

For 2026, the organization picked the theme “Food Explorers”, in partnership with Nestlé Professional. The idea is simple: get people of all ages asking basic questions about what they eat. Where does an ingredient come from? How is it grown or harvested? And why do these choices matter, for health and for the planet?

For chefs and teachers who want to take part, Worldchefs offers a “2026 Food Explorers Toolkit”: workshop guides, recipes built around the “Hero Ingredients” picked by Nestlé Professional, posters and certificates to hand out. On the ground, that means cooking workshops, classroom visits, trips to school gardens and small sustainability projects.

Participants are encouraged to share photos and videos of their workshops using the hashtags #ICDFoodExplorers and #InternationalChefsDay. Twenty-two years after it started, International Chefs Day remains one of the rare days when a Michelin-starred chef in Paris, a school-canteen cook in Latin America and a restaurant owner in Asia all answer, in their own way, the same question: how to give the next generation the tools to understand what’s on their plate.
