In San Francisco, Californios Becomes the World’s First Three-Michelin-Star Mexican Restaurant

On June 24, aboard the floating restaurant Eve docked in San Diego, the Michelin Guide unveiled its 2026 California selection. The headline: for the first time, a Mexican restaurant earned the guide’s highest honor, three stars.

The winner is Californios. Chef Val Cantú opened it in San Francisco’s Mission District in January 2015, later moving the restaurant to SoMa in 2021, and it has stayed on Michelin’s radar ever since: a first star in 2015, a second in 2017 (already a first for a Mexican restaurant in the United States), and now this third star in 2026, for a menu built around aged mole, blue corn tortillas pressed to order, and Pacific seafood, nowhere near the taco-truck clichés.

Californios isn’t the only one celebrating. An hour’s drive north, Enclos, set inside a restored Victorian building in downtown Sonoma, also picked up three stars, just eighteen months after opening in December 2024. Chef Brian Limoges pairs produce from Stone Edge Farm with nods to his New Hampshire upbringing, serving dishes like clam chowder chawanmushi and lobster roll croustade.

Further down the list, Kato in Los Angeles moved up from one to two stars, and nine restaurants earned their first star. California now counts ten three-star restaurants in total, twice as many as New York.

Traditional Mexican cuisine has been on UNESCO’s intangible heritage list since 2010, yet it had largely stayed off the top tier of the major international guides. Californios’ third star doesn’t settle that imbalance on its own, but it sets a precedent no Mexican restaurant could claim before June 24.
