On July 11, the specialist trade press outlet Travel And Tour World (TTW) published its ranking of the world’s 50 best food destinations for 2026. The result will likely surprise more than one fine-dining enthusiast: Mexico takes the top spot, ahead of Italy and Spain.

The choice holds up. In Mexico City, Michelin-starred restaurants sit blocks from taco stands. In Oaxaca, mole is still cooked from centuries-old recipes. In Guadalajara, tequila flows alongside tortas ahogadas. TTW credits the country with blending Indigenous heritage and Spanish influence without ever freezing either one in place.

Italy and Spain follow close behind, carried by Naples and its pizza margherita, Bologna and its tortellini, and Barcelona and its tapas. Japan lands in fourth thanks to Tokyo and Osaka, while India takes fifth for the sheer range of its regional cuisines, from Delhi to Hyderabad.

The ranking rests on nine specific criteria: culinary heritage, regional diversity, street food, fine dining, quality of local ingredients, drink traditions, sustainability, authenticity and overall visitor experience. In other words, nothing like a simple Michelin-star scoreboard.

And that’s exactly where things sting for France: long treated as the world’s culinary benchmark, it lands only eleventh, behind the United States, Greece, Portugal, China and Indonesia. No need to panic at the Quai d’Orsay, but it’s a reminder that a food scene today gets judged on its overall depth, not just its most prestigious tables. Peru (12th), Thailand (13th) and Morocco (20th) confirm that the map of what the world eats stretches well beyond the usual borders of gastronomy.
